 HELP WANTED

Term of Employment 1926-1966 (Late Ponce de Leon Period to the Coming of Mickey Mouse!)

Successful applicant must be able to:

*   Start business (fernery and land development) without prior experience right before the Florida Land Boom of 1926 goes Bust.  Keep it going through The Great Depression.  Be prepared to fight for control of company against partner, stockholders, and carpetbaggers….and appearance in Florida Supreme Court.

.

*          Found town in 1940 and fight in court to keep it established.  You and the citizens will not want to pay real estate tax, and create a "Realty Tax Free Town."   While an interesting concept, it guarantees advancement of personal debt.  Fundraising for town treasury will become a necessary survival skill for twenty years.  Later, efforts to get a bank will be politically thwarted despite local need and support.

*         Immediately upon founding of town, start intentional growth in face of WWII.  When your business is declared unessential, rebirth it using woman-power for war production.  You will be responsible for getting the knowledge and equipment to make that business successful.  When young girls lie about age to get employment, be prepared for the government to broaden the war front in a campaign against you.  Town will do well, but you will face a government shutdown of one business just as you tool up for it.  Anticipate the wipe out almost all profits incurred during wartime.  When war is over, but federal lawsuit is not, you must redefine the town again for GIs coming home and needing jobs.

*         In the late 1940's and 1950s, you must double your efforts to promote the town.  Right hand drive car and Cadillacs must go “cross-country” through woods, fields, and marshes.

Fight for the town to have its own post office will last 17 years before one is established in 1957.  You will need a utility franchise agreement to make improvements to your company but the town will want you to make them before granting the franchise as a show of good faith.

*      During the boom of the 1960s, US Census will confirm that the town is the fastest growing small town in the fastest growing metropolitan area in America. The citizens, of course, will decide your help is no longer desirable.  Regardless, you will face growth and development challenges, while Russia and Cuba keep Florida in the headlines.

Through the years, you must start other businesses, including utilities, railway express agency, azalea gardens, textiles, harness horse track, golf course, credit union, post office, and cemetery.  Ivy League degree is helpful but unnecessary in most instances.  Must handle resistant politicians, bankers, and irate citizens.  Creative financing skill a must. Survival optional.

Family time very limited, as required workaholic nature of job will override its use.  No vacation time.  Expect divorce, bleeding ulcers, heart problems, endless financial stress.  White suits, broad brimmed hats and wingtip shoes will be the preferred attire.  No pay except what you can make from business after development, attorneys fees, payrolls, income taxes and other "normal" operating expenses.

Kenneth MacIntosh, who served as the City Attorney from 1960 to 1996, remembered how proud Hibbard was of the statement on the water tower. "This was his ideology for development, to develop a tax free city."
